  • Plan, concert ukulele, Spanish heel (ref: PL62)

    by Scott Antes

Concert size uke plan by Scott Antes. This plan includes two pages of detailed notes to accompany the plan. These are clearly drawn, easy to follow plans as are all of the plans drawn by Scott, a mechanical engineer who provides us with several of the plans we sell. Although this plan features a Spanish heel, modifications can be easily made to convert it to a mortise and tenon/bolt-on neck and the specs for the modifications are included on the drawings.

Choose your back and side set. The set you choose is the set you get but until you check out and pay for it, the set is still available for sale to other customers.

Bookmatched back and side set includes two bookmatched back pieces and 2 bookmatched sides. If you choose a Back/Side and Top set, you need not choose a top in the soundboard section.

A good choice is Mahogany. Koa is the most traditional choice but also more expensive.

Choose your 2-piece bookmatched soundboard. If you chose a Back/Side/Top set from the Back & Sides category, you do not need a top, but you may purchase one if you wish.

In some cases, you are able to select a specific set of wood to include in your kit (“select a set”). Please note that until you pay for your order, that select-a-set is available for sale to other customers. Select-a-sets are easy to identify as they have a 3-digit ID code following the part number/SKU for example TSSUCTBC_120.

Engelmann or Sitka Spruce should be selected if you are looking for a bolder, more nuanced tone.

READ!!! You must enter a scale length here or we will not be able to process your order!

**You must have selected a fingerboard to use this service.

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well. If you do not make choices, we will choose the following for you: Slot Depth - .095", Nut Slot Position - Standard Nut Slot Position, Nut Slot Offset - 1/8" behind the nut.

Enter a scale length between 8" and 40". Use the fingerboard calculator in the LMI Help Center to be sure your choices will fit on the board you chose. The PL62 plan uses a 14.75" scale. The Red Sands PL89 uses a 15" scale.

To convert mm to inches, divide the mm by a factor of 25.4. Ex: 660mm divided by 25.4 equals 25.98" inches.

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well. Enter the number of fret slots desired (not including the nut slot).

Both of the plans offered suggest 17 frets.

Nut Position - Choose either the Standard or Zero Fret nut position option. The Standard nut slot moves the kerf back half the width of the slot. Our slots are .024”, so we move it back .012”. This puts the string’s breakaway point (the edge of the nut) at “true zero”. The Zero Fret option places the nut slot so that it is centered at the zero point of the scale. This works for those who install a zero fret – a fret at the nut position (with the actual nut getting placed just behind it to position the string spacing and guide the strings towards the tuning machines). Some players like an instrument with a zero fret as it helps eliminate the tonal differences between fretted and unfretted notes.

Fingerboard positions markers for the side and face of the fingerboard. Mother-of-pearl or plastic pearloid markers are pretty traditional. We recommend 2mm for the side dots and 4.7 mm for the fingerboard face. Remember that shell can't be exported (due to extra paperwork and fees), so choose plastic and/or stone alternatives if you live outside the United States.

We recommend the HSS316B for inlaying 4.72mm dots.

Wood or plastic that protects the end grain of the back or top. Depending on the length of the product you will need 1 or 2 for the top, another 1 or 2 for the back, and 1 for the fingerboard (normally left unbound). There should be enough remaining for an end graft if desired.

A nice black frame is a good choice. Black plastic or Indian Ebony work well here. Wood binding requires heat to bend, or we can bend it for you.

Plastic makes a good binding/purfling due to its resiliency and ease in bending. You can rip the laminated bindings to use as purfling. Although our plastic binding is cut as cleanly as possible, it might be necessary to run the binding strips over a file (in a vice) prior to installation to further smooth out the edge.

  • Khaya neck blank, 1st grade, 24" x 3" x 7/8" (ref: NKKH1243)

24” neck blanks typically require a heel blank.

Khaya has often been overlooked as a substitute for Mahogany. Though it is an attractive wood, the wide pores, lighter weight, and pinkish color we usually see in this species clearly distinguish it from "the real thing". We have found that there are different strains of Khaya that look nearly identical to Honduran Mahogany - or at least present themselves as the best substitute we have come across so far! The suggestion to carry it came from a well-known manufacturer who has been using it on their high-end instruments with no protests from discerning customers.

First grade necks and heels are straight-grained, quartersawn with a 25° variance off quarter allowed.

  • Cocobolo Rosewood bridge blank, 1st grade, steel string (ref: BBCB1SS)

Recently our cocobolo has come in in varied colors and tones. In order to give you a more accurate representation of the colors we have available, we have broken them into 3 different groups:

    • Traditional - the colors you are accustomed to seeing from LMI - typically alternating lines of orange and black
    • Two-toned - there are two relatively distinct bands of color on these
    • Dark - Not the orange/yellow you are accustomed to seeing, but a much darker color reminiscent of Panama Rosewood

Granadillo is a relatively new wood to American guitar making but is fairly common in South America. It is non-porous, straight grained, very dense, and has a ringing, bright tap tone. It works easily but can dull tools a bit. It has a medium to fine texture, and finishes well. The reddish brown color will darken to a brick color over time much like Honduran Rosewood.

West African Ebony has been a standard wood for factory guitars in Europe and America, and for many builders, it is preferred because it is easier to plane and is more stable than other Ebonies. It is rarely pure-black, but the streaks and mottling that are indicative of West African Ebony are now largely accepted in the marketplace.

The reinforcement plate that goes under the bridge helping to stabilize the bridge and prevent strings from damaging the soundboard. The BPRW Indian Rosewood bridge is a good choice here but cannot be exported, so if you live outside the United States choose Maple instead. Some also believe Maple is less likely to split over time.

Our smallest fretwire especially made for banjos, mandolins, dulcimers, and small instruments.

Fretwire is sold in either 4 or 100-foot lengths. 4 feet is normally enough for one standard instrument if you're not wasteful, but please check your plans before ordering. For easier installation, fretwire is coiled with the tang toward the inside of the curve. 4-foot sections might be cut into halves for shipping purposes. All of the fretwire we carry will fit into a .023" slot, with the exception of the FW75 nickel/silver wire.

Kerfing (or lining) provides a gluing surface for the joining of the backs, tops, and sides. In most cases, you will need 1 piece of kerfing for the top and 1 for the back but check your plan carefully as some instruments may require more. Each piece of kerfing measures 32 inches.

Small rectangular kerfing for ukuleles, dulcimers, and mandolins.

Kerfing is delicate. Despite our expertise in shipping, it is impossible to guarantee that a shipment of kerfing will not arrive without some damage. Fortunately, broken kerfing is almost invisible once installed, in fact, some people purposefully break it into sections during installation. If your shipment of kerfing suffers excessive damage, we will take care of it. Email photos of the damage to service@luthiersmerc.com. If replacements are in order, we will do so only once. If the replacement order also suffers damage, we will not replace those strips.

Robert O'Brien demonstrates how to work with kerfing.

Bracewood is used to reinforce the back and top plates of your instrument. Our bracewood is sold by the unit. Each unit of ukulele bracewood is the equivalent of a 1.5" x 1.5" x 10", but the wood you get may not come in these exact dimensions. You may get a piece that is 1" x 2 1/4" x 10" or you may get the equivalent of two units in one larger piece (ex: 2" x 4 1/2" x 10") or 4 smaller pieces. You typically need 1 piece of bracewood for a ukulele, but we are allowing 3.

We like to recommend the Sitka Spruce BWSS1MU.

  • Sitka Spruce bracewood, mando/uke, 1st grade

Bracewood is becoming harder to get as wood, in general, becomes scarcer. Mills are attempting to get the highest yields possible from their logs and/or billets meaning that there is less fall down from which to create bracewood. As a result, the quality of bracewood suffers – it won’t be perfectly quartersawn, the grain may not be straight the full length of the piece, there may be small defects and the grain could be wider than one is accustomed to. This is an industry-wide phenomenon and is outside of our control.

Unless otherwise noted, each bracewood unit is equivalent to 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 10", though the actual dimensions of the pieces you get may vary. On rare occasions, 2 units may be delivered in one double-size blank.

Our threaded brass inserts and hex-head bolts make neck alignment, attachment, and removal a breeze. Many of the leading manufacturers and hand builders attach necks to bodies with this system. The inserts have an aggressive thread to hold in the end grain of the flush-mounted heel or tenon. These inserts are for ukuleles larger than a soprano. For a soprano we recommend TNIU as it is a single insert/bolt set - two are not required.
