The Dreadnought Kit Wizard is set up to allow you to easily select items that are typically used in dreadnought guitar construction. The Kit Wizard provides you with 10% off retail on all parts and 30% off on customizations. To get this discount, you only need to include the "required items" in the kit. The price on the Kit Wizard will adjust as you add or modify items.

Adding customizations to your kit will add between 3 and 5 days to the preparation time, depending on the customizations included.

Bend Sides - Optional Item

We can bend sides to either a standard dreadnought based on our PL48 dreadnought plan or a cutaway dreadnought based on our PL48C cutaway dreadnought plan. The sides are sanded to approximately .090" and rough tapered from 4.5" at the upper bout to 5" at the lower bout. Don't make a choice if you plan on doing this yourself. We recommend to new builders that they have us bend their sides the first time around.

We are not able to do a Florentine cutaway.

Fingerboard Customization - Scale Length SVSL - Optional Item

READ!!! If you want a slotted fingerboard, you must enter a scale length here or we will not be able to process your order!

**You must have selected a fingerboard to use this service.

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well. If you do not make choices, we will choose the following for you: Slot Depth - .095", Nut Slot Position - Standard Nut Slot Position, Nut Slot Offset - 1/8" behind the nut.

Enter a scale length between 8" and 40". Use the fingerboard calculator in the LMI Help Center to be sure your choices will fit on the board you chose. We recommend a 25.4" scale length.

To convert mm to inches, divide the mm by a factor of 25.4. Ex: 660mm divided by 25.4 equals 25.98" inches.

Fingerboard Customization - Nut Slot Position

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well.

Nut Position - Choose either the Standard or Zero Fret nut position option. The Standard nut slot moves the kerf back half the width of the slot. Our slots are .024”, so we move it back .012”. This puts the string’s breakaway point (the edge of the nut) at “true zero”. The Zero Fret option places the nut slot so that it is centered at the zero point of the scale. This works for those who install a zero fret – a fret at the nut position (with the actual nut getting placed just behind it to position the string spacing and guide the strings towards the tuning machines). Some players like a guitar with a zero fret as it helps eliminate the tonal differences between fretted and unfretted notes.

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well.

Choose the nut slot offset. There will be this much wood left behind the nut position. 1/4" is pretty typical. Those building a Fender style guitar will want to choose an inch, so there is wood to taper into the headstock.

Wood or plastic that protects the end grain of the back or top. Depending on the length of the product you will need 1 or 2 for the top, another 1 or 2 for the back and 1 or 2 for the fingerboard (normally left unbound). There should be enough remaining for an end graft if desired.

Rosewood is a pretty standard choice here but cannot be exported outside the United States. Indian Ebony is also popular. Rocklite Ebano is a great sustainable choice and is very black.

The heel or neck block is affixed to the inside of the guitar and is where the neck attaches, typically by using bolts and/or a mortise and tenon.

Khaya has often been overlooked as a substitute for genuine Honduran Mahogany. We have carried it for years for backs and sides, and though it is a very attractive wood, the wide pores, lighter weight, and pinkish color we usually see in this species clearly distinguish it from "the real thing". But we have now found that there are different strains of Khaya that look nearly identical to Honduran Mahogany - or at least present themselves as the best substitute we have come across so far!
