Choose your back and side set.

Many dreadnought guitars are built using East Indian Rosewood. If you're concerned about exporting your guitar without paperwork hassles, choose an exportable wood instead.

The set you choose is the set you get but until you check out and pay for it, the set is still available for sale to other customers.

Bookmatched back and side set includes two bookmatched back pieces and 2 bookmatched sides.

We can bend sides to either a standard dreadnought based on our PL48 dreadnought plan or a cutaway dreadnought based on our PL48C cutaway dreadnought plan. The sides are sanded to approximately .090" and rough tapered from 4.5" at the upper bout to 5" at the lower bout. Don't make a choice if you plan on doing this yourself. We recommend to new builders that they have us bend their sides the first time around.

We are not able to do a Florentine cutaway.

READ!!! If you want a slotted fingerboard, you must enter a scale length here or we will not be able to process your order!

**You must have selected a fingerboard to use this service.

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well. If you do not make choices, we will choose the following for you: Slot Depth - .095", Nut Slot Position - Standard Nut Slot Position, Nut Slot Offset - 1/8" behind the nut.

Enter a scale length between 8" and 40". Use the fingerboard calculator in the LMI Help Center to be sure your choices will fit on the board you chose. We recommend a 25.4" scale length.

To convert mm to inches, divide the mm by a factor of 25.4. Ex: 660mm divided by 25.4 equals  25.98" inches.

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well.

Enter the number of fret slots desired (not including the nut slot). A typical number of slots on a dreadnought guitar is 20 slots.

Nut Position - Choose either the Standard or Zero Fret nut position option. The Standard nut slot moves the kerf back half the width of the slot. Our slots are .024”, so we move it back .012”. This puts the string’s breakaway point (the edge of the nut) at “true zero”. The Zero Fret option places the nut slot so that it is centered at the zero point of the scale. This works for those who install a zero fret – a fret at the nut position (with the actual nut getting placed just behind it to position the string spacing and guide the strings towards the tuning machines). Some players like a guitar with a zero fret as it helps eliminate the tonal differences between fretted and unfretted notes.

Choose the nut slot offset. There will be this much wood left behind the nut position. 1/4" is pretty typical. Those building a Fender style guitar will want to choose an inch, so there is wood to taper into the headstock.

Fingerboard positions markers for the side and face of the fingerboard. Mother-of-pearl or plastic pearloid markers are pretty traditional. We recommend 2mm for the side dots and 6.35 for the fingerboard face. Remember that shell can't be exported (due to extra paperwork and fees), so choose plastic and/or stone alternatives if you live outside the United States .

Wood or plastic that protects the end grain of the back or top. Depending on the length of the product you will need 1 or 2 for the top, another 1 or 2 for the back and 1 or 2 for the fingerboard (normally left unbound). There should be enough remaining for an end graft if desired.

Rosewood is a pretty standard choice here but cannot be exported outside the United States. Indian Ebony is also popular. Rocklite Ebano is a great sustainable choice and is very black.

Plastic makes a good binding/purfling due to its resiliency and ease in bending. You can rip the laminated bindings to use as purfling. Although our plastic binding is cut as cleanly as possible, it might be necessary to run the binding strips over a file (in a vice) prior to installation to further smooth out the edge.

Purfling goes between the binding and the top or back and provides contrast and beauty.  Depending on the length of the product you will need 1 or 2 for the top and 1 or 2 for the back. There should be enough remaining for an end graft if desired. You will find wood strips here as well.

The longer 64" purflings are easy as there is no joint required at the butt of the guitar.

Fiber veneer is very flexible and no bending is needed prior to installation. Wood veneer may need to be bent to avoid breakage depending on the shape of the instrument you are building and the number of laminates in the layup. One can sometimes use a simple household iron to bend these to the appropriate shape. These laminates should not be soaked.

Tell us how many pieces of your purfling you want to have bent to a dreadnought shape based on the PL48/48C plans. If you choose a cutaway shape, we will bend half the pieces to a cutaway and half to a non-cutaway.

Price shown is per piece of purfling bent.

Some purflings don't need to be bent. If this is the case with your purflings, we will remove this cost from your kit.

  • Honduran Mahogany bolt-on carved neck, diamond volute, long scale, deep heel (ref: NKHMBDHLS)

All our pre-carved Honduran Mahogany necks are CNC (computer numerically controlled) routed from quartersawn wood ensuring accuracy and consistency. Compare the machining to the necks of our competitors, it's far superior!  The oversized peghead allows the builders to customize their peghead thickness and shape. The peghead on all this neck has industry standard glued wings on the peghead that are virtually invisible. The neck is pre-drilled and the inserts installed for the bolt-on neck attachment. We recommend our TRSD truss rod with this neck.  The diamond volute (pictured) is decorative, but also adds a bit of mass at a structurally weaker point on the neck. It can be filed off if you prefer.

Khaya has often been overlooked as a substitute for Mahogany. Though it is an attractive wood, the wide pores, lighter weight, and pinkish color we usually see in this species clearly distinguish it from "the real thing". We have found that there are different strains of Khaya that look nearly identical to Honduran Mahogany - or at least present themselves as the best substitute we have come across so far!

African Sapele features an attractive ribbon figure than runs the direction of the grain. It is an excellent alternative to Honduran Mahogany, with similar color, and above average stability. It is a little heavier than Honduran Mahogany and the texture is not quite as even.

Our DIY (do-it-yourself) neck is a partially machined neck. We have done the hard stuff, leaving you to do the fun part! This neck is perfect for beginning luthiers who want to try their hand at neck carving but don't have the confidence to "go it alone". It is also great for accomplished luthiers who want someone else to do the grunt work but want to add their own signature to the neck by customizing the shape.

The oversized peghead allows the builders to customize their peghead thickness and shape. The peghead on this neck has industry-standard glued wings on the peghead that are virtually invisible. The neck is pre-drilled and the inserts are installed for the bolt-on neck attachment. We recommend the TRSD truss rod with this neck.

  • Khaya heel block (inside), 1st grade, 3" x 4" x 1 3/16" (ref: HBKH1341187)

The heel or neck block is affixed to the inside of the guitar and is where the neck attaches, typically by using bolts and/or a mortise and tenon.

Khaya has often been overlooked as a substitute for genuine Honduran Mahogany. We have carried it for years for backs and sides, and though it is a very attractive wood, the wide pores, lighter weight, and pinkish color we usually see in this species clearly distinguish it from "the real thing". But we have now found that there are different strains of Khaya that look nearly identical to Honduran Mahogany - or at least present themselves as the best substitute we have come across so far!

  • Sapele heel block (inside), 1st grade, 3" x 4" x 1 1/4" (ref: HBSA134125)

The heel or neck block is affixed to the inside of the guitar and is where the neck attaches, typically by using bolts and/or a mortise and tenon.

African Sapele features an attractive ribbon figure than runs the direction of the grain. It is an excellent alternative to Honduran Mahogany, with similar color, and above average stability. It is a little heavier than Honduran Mahogany and the texture is not quite as even.

First grade necks and heels are straight-grained, quartersawn with a 25° variance off quarter allowed.

Bridges are available either blank for carving your own, or pre-carved. We recommend the pre-carved BFIESS1 or BFRWSS1, but if you want to carve your own bridge, either the Ebony BBAE1SS or Rosewood BBRW1SS (can not be exported outside the USA) are good choices.
