Alder and Swamp Ash are the traditional choices for these types of guitars. Each wood imparts a different tonal signature to the instrument.

If you intend to paint your body a solid opaque color, you might consider Alder as it is less porous. This will save you a step in grain filling and give you a nice even finish.

Khaya has often been overlooked as a substitute for Mahogany. Though it is an attractive wood, the wide pores, lighter weight and pinkish color we usually see in this species clearly distinguish it from "the real thing". We have found that there are different strains of Khaya which look nearly identical to Honduran Mahogany - or at least present themselves as the best substitute we have come across so far!

Nut Position - Choose either the Standard or Zero Fret nut position option. The Standard nut slot moves the kerf back half the width of the slot. Our slots are .024”, so we move it back .012”. This puts the string’s breakaway point (the edge of the nut) at “true zero”. The Zero Fret option places the nut slot so that it is centered at the zero point of the scale. This works for those who install a zero fret – a fret at the nut position (with the actual nut getting placed just behind it to position the string spacing and guide the strings towards the tuning machines). Some players like a guitar with a zero fret as it helps eliminate the tonal differences between fretted and unfretted notes.

For this kit, the standard nut placement is recommended, but we present options for those who are working from untraditional or hybrid designs.

Choose the nut slot offset. There will be this much wood left behind the nut position. 1/4" is pretty typical. Those building a Fender style guitar will want to choose an inch, so there is wood to taper into the headstock.

We have also presented options for those who are working from untraditional or hybrid designs.

Fingerboard markers are a great way to add a functional aesthetic to your instrument. Most people choose a light material for dark fretboards like rosewood and a dark material for light woods like maple. We also have options like gold, mother of pearl, and turquoise for those looking for a more exotic look. We recommend 6.35 mm for face dots and 2 mm for side dots. Remember that shell can't be exported (due to extra paperwork and fees), so choose plastic and/or stone alternatives if you live outside the United States.

Bone has been the standard for guitar nuts and saddles for a long time. You simply can’t go wrong with a bone nut! It’s a fantastic idea to buy Corian “practice” nuts as well as an extra bone nut or two. The nut is really important for the setup so you want to have every opportunity to make sure you make it well. If you need more nuts than the Kit Wizard permits, they can be purchased outside the Wizard.

Our NF is the perfect size blank for creating the nuts shown in the plans we suggest.

Most F-style guitars will have 6 tuners in a line on the left side of the peghead if you’re looking at the front of the guitar. You can also put the tuners on the right side to make a “reverse” peghead guitar. This was popular with guitar manufacturers in the 80’s and has remained a feature of many guitars since. You could also go with a 3L/3R design to give your S or T-style guitar a unique hybrid twist.

You’ll need string ferrules if you’re making a guitar equipped with a hardtail (non-tremolo) bridge that requires the strings to be strung up through the body of the guitar, i.e. T –style. The balls of the strings rest against the ferrules which gives the strings a solid point to anchor. String ferrules are sold separately. 6 are needed.

Nickel/Silver fretwire is the most common fretwire and has been the standard for years. Gold “Evo” wire is made from a copper alloy. It’s a bit tougher than nickel/silver and not quite as hard as stainless steel. It’s gold all the way through and will give a very unique appearance to a guitar. Stainless steel is the most durable fretwire you can get, boasting a super long life and great corrosion resistance, however, stainless steel has a tendency to wear down tools a lot quicker and can be difficult to work with.

The FW74 fretwire is our most popular option here.

  • Fretwire, 18% nickel/silver, 4 feet

Hard, standard size long wearing fretwire. This is easily our most popular fretwire and is used mostly for steel string, but is often used on classical and electric guitars as well. This wire is similar to Dunlop's #6230 wire.

Fretwire is sold in either 4 or 100-foot lengths. 4 feet is normally enough for one standard instrument if you're not wasteful, but please check your plans before ordering. For easier installation, fretwire is coiled with the tang toward the inside of the curve. 4-foot sections might be cut into halves for shipping purposes. All of the fretwire we carry will fit into a .023" slot, with the exception of the FW75 nickel/silver wire.

Truss rods are an essential part of steel string guitar design. As the strings are tuned up to pitch the string tension acts on the neck causing it to want to tilt forward. We call this “relief.” A single action truss rod directly counters this. As you turn the nut it puts tension in the opposite direction of the strings. When the neck moves the opposite direction we call it “backbow”. A double action truss rod is capable of putting tension on the neck in either direction and while you will very seldom need it to, this can be quite advantageous for certain situations.

Optional! We also offer carbon fiber reinforcements that can be installed on either side of the fretboard for an ultra-stable neck.

Traditionally, electric guitars only include a one-way truss rod, but our TRED (double acting) is a more popular choice these days. Couple this with two GR0 rods for a very stable neck.

  • Truss rod double action welded, 17" x 3/8" (overall length 18")

Protected by U.S. Patent No. 6,259,008, this is the best rod on the market in our humble opinions. The square stock bears against the bottom of the fingerboard, so no filler strip is necessary. Turn the nut one way and the rod bows one direction, turn the nut the other way, the rod bows the other direction! With this rod, the nut is actually welded onto the adjusting rod which has been right-hand threaded on one end and reverse threaded the other. The bottom, round rod is covered with heat-shrink tubing to protect against rod buzz. This rod requires a slot 1/4" wide x 3/8" deep. The bar-stock dimensions and the round-stock OD with the heat-shrink tubing are the same and that makes for easy installation.

  • Truss rod welded nut, 17" x 3/8" (overall length 17 3/4")

This rod only needs a 3/16" x 3/8" deep slot. The top rod is square, welded to round stock. Square stock means more surface area bears against the fingerboard, making fingerboard cracking improbable, and the use of a spline unnecessary. Put a piece of scotch tape over the rod when spreading glue, then remove it right before clamping the fingerboard. It's a good idea to cushion this rod with a little silicone, especially near the nut and a few other points. This prevents the rod's resonant frequency from making unnerving buzzing sounds. You will have to excavate the channel a little more, about 1/2", to accommodate the key stock against which the nut bears.

  • Truss rod single rod compression , 17 1/2" x 3/16"

The compression rod is made from 3/16" stock and is wrapped in high-quality heat-shrink tubing. The adjustment is accomplished by tightening the hex nut on the threaded end of the rod. The rod is held immobile at the opposite end by means of a right-angle bend. The wrapping prevents rattling and ensures a good snug fit without binding in the slot.

  • Carbon fiber neck reinforcement, 1/4" x 1/2" x 18"

Carbon fiber exhibits so many of the qualities useful in fine instrument construction — namely, low weight, stiffness, stability, resistance to fatigue and creep. Its low weight and high stiffness – three times stiffer than steel on a weight-to-weight basis, 80% as stiff on a cross-sectional area comparison – offers many advantages to the guitar builder.

Without fear of fatigue, fan braces (between which a sheet of carbon fiber has been laminated) can be shaved down considerably, allowing the top to be more responsive to string energy.

Neck reinforcement stock can be laminated in such a manner that the reinforcement continues through the peghead joint, reducing flex and therefore reducing energy loss to the head area.

The tradition with S-style guitars is to mount all the electronics with the exception of the output jack to the pickguard, this means that if you want different electronics like humbuckers or extra controls, you’ll need to make sure your pickguard has the correct spaces and your guitar has the correct routs corresponding underneath.

There’s a lot that can go into a bridge choice. First and foremost, you should look at your plans and verify the type of bridge that’s called for. This can be important because certain guitars may call for particular bridges. For example the baseplate of the bridge for a Tele® covers the base of the bridge pickup and is an essential part of the traditional Tele® look. That being said you have a lot of options when it comes to the bridge. Strat®-style tremolos enable you to bend the pitch of a note with an attached arm or bar, and the Schaller 3D bridge enables you to dial in a setup with superb accuracy. Different bridges will bring different things to the table in terms of aesthetic and usability so try to familiarize yourself with the different designs.

Clear selection

One of the most subjective parts of the building process is pickup selection. There are no hard and fast rules but there are a few things you might want to know. Single or Double Coil - Single coil pickups are more often associated with F-style guitars and sound bright and chime-y while double coils (aka humbuckers) are darker with more output. P90 or “soapbar” style pickups are single coils with a unique midrange forward voicing.

Output - Manufacturers will often make bridge pickups of a higher output impedance than neck pickups because the strings physically vibrate less near the bridge.

Rout – Regardless of whether you go with a single coil, humbucker, or P90, pickguard, ring, or direct mounting - you’ll need to rout the body to accommodate your electronics. Your pickup selection determines the type of rout you’ll need.

A lot of people like to use a taller pickup ring in the bridge position but with a flat top bolt-neck design you may find this to be unnecessary. These are often designed with the neck at a zero degree angle so there is an equal amount of space between the strings and pickup for either the neck or bridge. However, if you had a steeper neck angle, the strings would taper down towards the neck pickup from the bridge. This is also why “wedge” rings are available, they taper down with the strings so the pickups are parallel. One can see an example of this by taking a view from the side of most “single-cut” LP style electric guitars.

Capacitors are used to turn a potentiometer into a tone control. They can be made from different materials and to different capacitance values. 0.022mfd has been standard for a while but different eras had different standards, many people like 0.047mfd. for vintage F-style instruments. A good rule of thumb is that the higher the capacitance the darker the tone. Because capacitors are rather inexpensive many people make jigs for testing many out at a time to figure out the “just right” value for that specific guitar.

Copper shielding is used to cover the inside of guitar electronic cavities and covers. This copper “box” protects your electronics from outside interference. There are a lot of anecdotal stories about guitars picking up radio, tv, and general noise from surrounding electronics and playing them back out of the amplifier. Don’t let it be you.
