ASL - American School of Lutherie Materials Set - Price based on choices

$0.00

These are the materials that Charles Fox uses in his steel guitar building course. Unlike our other Kit Wizard offerings, all of the items in the materials set are required as they are all used in the course. Anyone may purchase this kit, just remember that it is far less flexible as it is designed specifically for the ASL building program.

Charles is particular about the back and sides included in your set. Please be sure to select for rich red coloration first, and tight straight grain secondly. If your selection does not meet these criteria, it may delay your order. If you have questions or need a suggestion, please contact Chris in the LMI Sales Office.

  • Top Sitka Spruce, 3A grade, dreadnought (ref: TSS3ASS)

Sitka Spruce is very stiff. Because of its strength and toughness, it is well suited for steel-string acoustic guitars. It has even been used successfully for classical guitars. The color of Sitka Spruce ranges from white to pinkish to light brown. Some tops display a lot of color variation.

  • Shell purfling, Abalam curved paua abalone, .063"/1.6mm wide

"Abalam" is a stunning inlay material, made by laminating extremely thin sections of shell in such a way as to render the entire surface of the sheet with beautiful, figured shell patterns — unlike natural shell slab pieces which vary over the surface area and depth of the piece. It is perfectly flat and is actually easier to saw into delicate patterns because of the homogeneous nature of the laminations. This is the ideal material when you need unusually large pieces or for projects where extreme figure is a must.

When the binding glue is dry, the Teflon is carefully pulled out and the shell strips glued into the resulting groove. The Teflon strips are approximately 34"-36" long and can be cleaned and used several times if care is taken not to stretch them during use.

Fiber veneer is very flexible and no bending is needed prior to installation. Wood veneer may need to be bent to avoid breakage depending on the shape of the instrument you are building and the number of laminates in the layup. One can sometimes use a simple household iron to bend these to the appropriate shape. These laminates should not be soaked.

Charles has selected a West African Ebony Fingerboard for this guitar.

  • West African Ebony Fingerboard

West African Ebony has been a standard fingerboard wood for factory guitars in Europe and America, and for many builders, it is preferred because it is easier to plane and is more stable than other Ebonies. It is rarely pure-black, but the streaks and mottling that are indicative of West African Ebony are now largely accepted in the marketplace.

  • Fretwire, 18% nickel/silver, 4 feet (ref: FW74)

Buy more & save! Save 20% on 6 or more.

Hard, standard size long-wearing fretwire. This is easily our most popular fretwire and is used mostly for steel-string, but is often used on classical and electric guitars as well. This wire is similar to Dunlop's #6230 wire.

Fretwire is sold in either 4 or 100-foot lengths. 4 feet is normally enough for one standard instrument if you're not wasteful, but please check your plans before ordering. For easier installation, fretwire is coiled with the tang toward the inside of the curve. 4-foot sections might be cut into halves for shipping purposes. All of the fretwire we carry will fit into a .023" slot, with the exception of the FW75 nickel/silver wire.

  • Truss rod double action welded, 14 1/2" x 3/8" (overall length 15 1/2")

Protected by U.S. Patent No. 6,259,008, this is the best rod on the market in our humble opinions. The square stock bears against the bottom of the fingerboard, so no filler strip is necessary. Turn the nut one way and the rod bows one direction, turn the nut the other way, the rod bows the other direction! With this rod, the nut is actually welded onto the adjusting rod which has been right-hand threaded on one end and reverse threaded the other. The bottom, round rod is covered with heat-shrink tubing to protect against rod buzz. This rod requires a slot 1/4" wide x 3/8" deep. The bar-stock dimensions and the round-stock OD with the heat-shrink tubing are the same and that makes for easy installation.

See note about hex wrenches below.

  • Carbon fiber neck reinforcement, 1/8" x 3/8" x 18"

Carbon fiber exhibits so many of the qualities useful in fine instrument construction — namely, low weight, stiffness, stability, resistance to fatigue and creep. Its low weight and high stiffness – three times stiffer than steel on a weight-to-weight basis, 80% as stiff on a cross-sectional area comparison – offers many advantages to the guitar builder.

Without fear of fatigue, fan braces (between which a sheet of carbon fiber has been laminated) can be shaved down considerably, allowing the top to be more responsive to string energy.

Neck reinforcement stock can be laminated in such a manner that the reinforcement continues through the peghead joint, reducing flex and therefore reducing energy loss to the head area.
