Honduran Mahogany neck blank, 1.5 grade, 35" x 3" x 7/8"
1.5 grade. These necks are quartersawn but have minor defects many people are willing to work with for a discount. There are 3 photos that illustrate the types of defects you might find in these necks.
A 35" neck generally allows you to produce your neck and heel from the same stock which prevents issues with color/grain mismatch.
First grade necks and heels are straight-grained, quartersawn with a 25° variance off quarter allowed.
Khaya and Sapele are great substitutes for Mahogany. Since Honduran Mahogany can't be shipped out of the country due to CITES regulations, we recommend this option for our international customers.
The longer a neck blank is, the more difficult it becomes to maintain straight grain along the entire piece. We attempt to maintain straight grain along our 35" necks for at least 24" after which the grain may veer slightly off the board.
