It is critical when using a satin finish that it is mixed well so that the flattening agent is fully incorporated into the lacquer. It is recommended to build coats with gloss lacquer, sand to 400 grit, and apply 2-3 coast of Satin finish slightly thinned to improve flow.

Archtop builder Tom Ribbecke is a happy convert to Cardinal lacquer, saying that compared to the 'old standby' it "creates a thinner final coat, burns in better and buffs well". He only uses 5-10% thinner in his application.
Unlike other musical instrument lacquers, Luthierlac sinks back quickly and can be buffed after only 7 days. The lacquer is pre-reduced 10%, so it is ready to spray. It can be further reduced to your liking from 10-20% with the Cardinal lacquer thinner.
Cardinal is a family-owned company based in Los Angeles, CA since 1952. For 60 years Cardinal has manufactured coatings of various chemistries, including nitrocellulose lacquers. Over the last few years, they have worked closely with a select group of luthiers, studying the art of guitar finishing.

Great finish
I have some limited experience spraying finishes so on my first guitar build I thought (with all the mistakes) I'd use a satin finish to prevent highlighting all my mistakes. I sprayed 12 coats of this lacquer and ended up with a beautiful satin finish. I compared it recently to some high dollar satin guitar finishes in the guitar store and laughed out loud. My finish is head and shoulders better than some pretty name brand satin finishes I looked at. This is some great lacquer, very easy to use. I sprayed on days with low humidity and thinned about 10% just to make it easier to spray. I had a couple runs that I repaired by allowing to cure 24 hours and scraping the run down and spraying again. I sprayed 3 coats a day and sanded with 320 grit before the next 3 coats. I don't intend to do anything further after the 12th coat. It looks fantastic. I've very pleased with this lacquer. I have used some in the past that was not so easy to use. This, no problem.
