Cardinal Luthierlac spray lacquer - Satin, 1 gallon/128 oz
Cardinal Luthierlac Spray Lacquer is a solvent-borne satin nitrocellulose lacquer designed specifically for musical instruments. It exhibits toughness, ease of application, fast drying, resistance to cold-checking, and buffing properties that result in a beautiful finish. Unlike other instrument lacquers, Cardinal’s Luthierlac sinks back quickly and can be buffed after only 7 days. The lacquer is pre-reduced 10%, so it is ready to spray. It can be further reduced to your liking from 10-20% with the Cardinal thinner.
It is critical when using a satin finish that it is mixed well so that the flattening agent is fully incorporated into the lacquer. It is recommended to build coats with gloss lacquer, sand to 400 grit and apply 2-3 coast of Satin finish slightly thinned to improve flow.
Archtop builder Tom Ribbecke is a happy convert to Cardinal lacquer, saying that compared to the 'old standby' it "creates a thinner final coat, burns in better and buffs well". He only uses 5-10% thinner in his application.
Cardinal is a family owned company based in Los Angeles, CA since 1952. For 60 years Cardinal has manufactured coatings of various chemistries, including nitrocellulose lacquers. Over the last few years they have worked closely with a select group of luthiers, studying the art of guitar finishing.
