Choose the plan you want to start with. The Ramirez (plan SKU PL28, template SKU SPT1)  is the plan we use for your side bending shape and other customizations.

This shape is very close to both the '37 Hauser plan (plan SKU PL64, template SKU SPT14)  and the '43/'48 Hauser plan (plan SKU PL40, template SKU SPT2)(they are both slightly smaller but very close), so choosing this profiling customization will work for all three.

  • 1937 Hauser classical guitar (ref: PL64)

    by Guild of American Luthiers

Segovia called this the "guitar of the epoch". Shortly before his death, Segovia donated this instrument to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. R.E. Brune had the opportunity to study, measure, and photograph this important historical guitar in December 1991. Brune originally offered a hand-drawn plan which was difficult for new builders to use. Since then the plan has been completely re-worked by the Guild of American Luthiers and is an easy-to-read and exceptionally detailed two-page technical drawing.

This is a nicely drawn 2 page set of plans for a 650mm fan-braced guitar designed by Colorado luthier Robert O’Brien (author of our very popular ”Tips du Jour” videos). Robbie has used these plans to teach many of his classical students, so they are tried and tested.

    Drawn by R. Padron.

  • Plan, 1864 Antonio de Torres (ref: PL58)

Torres established a strutting pattern of seven fan struts and two closing bars, which gave the soundboards on his small instruments the support they needed while allowing the wood to vibrate enough to produce a balanced sound.

This plan produces an elegantly shaped guitar which, although smaller than some modern concert guitars, is very visually appealing. Drawing by Roy Courtnall Summerfield.

  • Plan, 1933 Santos Hernandez Flamenco (ref: PL75)

Santos Hernandez was the most gifted and famous maker of flamenco guitars in the 20th century. His work on perfecting the design of the flamenco guitar helped establish it as a fine instrument.

There are two basic ways in which the flamenco guitar differs from the classical. First is in the choice of woods to use, and second is in the design and thickness of the component parts. The strutting in the flamenco is usually kept quite simple because the rather open, earthy sound is best achieved if the soundboard is not too controlled. Santos Hernandez used seven fan struts, but no closing struts at the lower end of the guitar. The weight of the guitar is kept to a minimum by using a thin soundboard, and thin Cypress for the back and ribs.

    Drawing by Roy Courtnall Summerfield.

A large-bodied, robust instrument with a powerful sound, this plan is typical of the Cedar soundboard instruments produced by Fleta. This guitar is identical to the Fleta played by Segovia for many years. These instruments now fetch very high prices. The plan includes measurements of the Fleta bracing system. Drawing by Roy Courtnall Summerfield.

  • Plan, 1972 Daniel Friedrich classical guitar (ref: PL21)

Daniel Friedrich builds in his Paris workshop and adopts a thoroughly scientific approach based on the Torres and Bouchet designs. He measures the stiffness of his soundboards and braces and has used both Cedar and Spruce for the top. He laminates the ribs, (since 1970) for a total thickness of 4mm! His guitars are said to possess good sustain, tone, and great power. Among the players of his instruments are Stein-Erik Olsen, the late Ida Presti, and Alexander Lagoya, who guided Friedrich in his early years as a maker. Drawing by Roy Courtnall Summerfield.

We will bend your sides to the 1966 Ramirez shape (plan SKU PL28, template SKU SPT1). This is very close to both the '37 Hauser shape (plan SKU PL64, template SKU SPT14)  and the '43/'48 Hauser shape (plan SKU PL40, template SKU SPT2)(they are both slightly smaller but very close) so this bending customization should work for all three.

The sides are sanded to approximately .090" and rough tapered from 3.75" at the upper bout to 4.5" at the lower bout. Don't make a choice if you plan on doing this yourself. We recommend to new builders that they have us bend their sides the first time around.

**You must have selected a fingerboard to use this service.

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well. If you do not make choices, we will choose the following for you: Slot Depth - .095", Nut Slot Position - Standard Nut Slot Position, Nut Slot Offset - 1/8" behind the nut.

Enter a scale length between 8" and 40". Use the fingerboard calculator in the LMI Help Center to be sure your choices will fit on the board you chose. A common classical scale length is 650mm or 25.59"

**If you choose to have your fingerboard slotted, you must make a selection in the remaining fingerboard customizations as well.

Nut Position - Choose either the Standard or Zero Fret nut position option. The Standard nut slot moves the kerf back half the width of the slot. Our slots are .024”, so we move it back .012”. This puts the string’s breakaway point (the edge of the nut) at “true zero”. The Zero Fret option places the nut slot so that it is centered at the zero point of the scale. This works for those who install a zero fret – a fret at the nut position (with the actual nut getting placed just behind it to position the string spacing and guide the strings towards the tuning machines). Some players like a guitar with a zero fret as it helps eliminate the tonal differences between fretted and unfretted notes but it is not traditional on a classical guitar.

Wood or plastic that protects the end grain of the back or top. Depending on the length of the product you will need 1 or 2 for the top, another 1 or 2 for the back and 1 or 2 for the fingerboard (normally left unbound). There should be enough remaining for an end graft if desired.

Rosewood is a pretty standard choice here but cannot be exported outside the United States. Indian Ebony is also popular.

Fiber veneer is very flexible and no bending is needed prior to installation. Wood veneer may need to be bent to avoid breakage depending on the shape of the instrument you are building and the number of laminates in the layup. One can sometimes us a simple household iron to bend these to the appropriate shape. These laminates should not be soaked.

  • Classical 650mm scale pre-carved Spanish Cedar neck w/Ebony headplate (ref: NKSC1CLAE)

Our classical pre-carved DIY neck is produced by a well-known, high-end Spanish factory whose necks have gone on thousands of production instruments. This is not a finished neck, but rather a DIY (do-it-yourself) neck. We have done the hard stuff and you get to do the fun stuff. Purchasing a partially completed neck gives you the freedom to create your own peghead design, determine your nut width, and shape the neck and heel to your liking.

  • Honduran Mahogany neck blank, 1st grade, 35" x 3" x 7/8" (ref: NKHM1353)

A 35" neck generally allows you to produce your neck and heel from the same stock which prevents issues with color/grain mismatch.

Khaya has often been overlooked as a substitute for Mahogany. Though it is an attractive wood, the wide pores, lighter weight, and pinkish color we usually see in this species clearly distinguish it from "the real thing". We have found that there are different strains of Khaya that look nearly identical to Honduran Mahogany - or at least present themselves as the best substitute we have come across so far!

African Sapele features an attractive ribbon figure than runs the direction of the grain. It is an excellent alternative to Honduran Mahogany, with similar color, and above average stability. It is a little heavier than Honduran Mahogany and the texture is not quite as even.
