Astronium graveolens

Brazilian Tigerwood, also known as Goncalo Alves, is a wood that comes mainly from Brazil. It has been growing in popularity among builders who favor bold, contrasting figure on the back and sides. The color is an attractive honey-tan with broad reddish-brown stripes which often paint dramatic, symmetrical shapes across the bookmatched back. Although it is lightweight, it is only slightly porous and finishes nicely. Some say the tone is similar to Mahogany.

We can bend sides to match the Tenor PL77 plan, the Concert PL62 plan, or the Soprano PL51 plan. The sides are sanded to approximately .075" and are left at approximately 2.5-3" wide depending on the plan. We recommend to new builders that they have us bend their sides the first time around.

We will profile your back to the shape you choose leaving approximately 1/4 inch of extra material beyond the outline. This excess material can be removed later, once your box is complete, using a router with a flush trim bit or by other appropriate means. Note the concert and tenor profiling cannot be used with soprano sized ukulele sets.
