Product Description

Bracewood included. The bracewood is essentially a billet of well-quartered spruce sawn into 1/2" widths (see photo).

These Italian Spruce tops are specially selected and tested (not just graded) to put you ahead of the game when it comes to making superior-sounding tops. These tops are first selected for aesthetic excellence and then measured for their physical and acoustic properties. These properties are entered into an algorithm that transposes them into an index of performance - called the SRC (Sound Radiation Coefficient). SRC is best defined as the potential of a top to produce volume and respond to harmonic stimuli (such as vibrating strings). We say ‘potential’ because all the other elements that contribute to the sound of the instrument must be present, of course, to allow the top to function at its best.

According to Trevor Gore, any top with an SRC over 12 has the ability to produce a truly excellent sounding instrument. To learn more about Gore’s incorporation of SRC into lutherie, his book can be found here: https://goreguitars.com.au/shop/

There are three aesthetic classifications for these special soundboards: NIX (which means ‘snow’) are the clearest and most white tops. URSA tops have some element of bearclaw in the wood. AURA, while capable of producing the highest quality sound, may have some slight color, as well as grainline variations.
