Side Bending Blankets Our specially made 1/16" hard rubber heating blankets are made to heat thin wood pieces, like guitar sides and bindings, to the 300+°F necessary to bend them to the desired shape. These blankets can reach 500°F in just a minute or two, therefore, they must be used with either a timer or temperature controller to keep the blanket and/or the wood from burning up. These devices are absolutely necessary for safety in your shop. Our LMI Temperature Controller (part #TC120 or TC220) and timer (part #DT) are highly recommended for use with these blankets and are required for us to honor a warranty.
Our side bending blankets can be used a couple of ways to bend sides to shape. One way is to use a side bending blanket with a bending jig. Merely sandwich the unbent side, along with the heating blanket, between the two metal slats. The blanket can be used either under or on top of the side – find which way is best for you. Turn on (heat) the blanket for a few minutes and bend the side in the machine in the normal way. Some builders continue to heat – at below maximum heat – the side for awhile after the side is clamped into shape, and then let it cool down slowly before removing it from the mold. The bending blanket can also be used with a simple inside mold. Place the blanket on the side mold and heat it for 5 minutes or so. Place the moistened side on the heated blanket and clamp the waist area down as it becomes pliable with the heat. After the waist is clamped into place in the waist of the mold push the sides down slowly around the upper and lower bouts. As the side bends around the mold's shape clamp it down with any clamps available until the entire side is shaped around the mold.
We carry a full-size side bending blanket, a mandolin side bending blanket, a ukulele side bending blanket and a shorter 12" blanket that can be used to bend the separate cutaway piece for Florentine (pointed) cutaways.
Repair Blankets Our heating blankets are each cut for a specific use – i.e. SPBL2 Bridge Plate Blanket is shaped to cover and heat a typical Martin™ bridge plate, SPBL4 Fingerboard Blanket is shaped/sized to closely fit a tapered fingerboard. These blankets are designed to evenly heat the wood and loosen the glue joint for easy removal or repositioning. The blankets are manufactured for professional, durable, daily use including reinforced leads. These blankets can reach 500°F in just a minute or two, therefore, they must be used with either a timer or temperature controller to keep the blanket and/or the wood from burning up. These devices are absolutely necessary for safety in your shop. Our LMI Temperature Controllers (part #TC and TC220) and timer (part #DT) are highly recommended for use with these blankets and are required for us to honor a warranty.
CAUTION: These blankets can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Always make sure the blanket has something to transfer its heat to. Never leave a blanket plugged in hanging over a bench. Blankets used without a place to transfer their heat will burn themselves up and are a very serious hazard. Never leave your shop when you have a thermal blanket plugged in or turned on. Always use your blanket with a timer or temperature controller.
All heating blanket warranties are 1 year from the date of purchase. Warranties will not be honored for heating blankets that are used without a controller.
