“Hello! My first-ever order arrived today. I had ordered some wood items and they are GORGEOUS! Smooth, perfectly flat!, and the woods themselves - with each one I pulled out, I just kept saying, WOW!, *WOW*!!!, over and over. And thank you so much for the beautiful piece of East Indian Rosewood - it was described as "2nd grade" I believe, and I asked for a reddish color if possible, and I think this piece is absolutely stunning! These really exceeded my expectations! Thank you!"
Anything on the edge of an instrument that isn't the outermost edge (binding) is called "purfling". These all-wood marquetry strips add an appealing visual element to distinguish your instrument.
Derived from Martin's D-28 models, we offer 2 types of "herringbone" purfling, fine (PFI3) and bold (PFI4) –both have rosettes to match (seeRosettes R13 and R13F). Next we have two diagonal check purflings, one in alternating black and white (PFI2) and our brown and white with BWB separators (PFI5). They can also be inlaid into the back for a matching backstrip. The PFI6 was designed by Alain Cola of Dell'Arte Instruments. It is a 2-piece purfling based on a Washburn design. (Note: We are unable to bend the PFI6. It should be flexible enough to bend around most contours with the application of light heat such as a hair dryer or a heat gun set on a low setting.)
The rope bindings (BI13 and BI20T) can be used as a binding/purfling for ukuleles as they are 32" long. Bend these dry, don't soak them in water.
Purflings are 32" long, unless otherwise noted.
Please note:As these items are made from wood and laid up with glue, dimensions can vary. Always wait for your bindings or purflings to arrive before routing the ledge of your guitar.
