Testimonials

"I’m about 10 tops into a stack of 40 cedar tops I got from you, and whenever I want to start a new guitar, I just walk over and pick a top off the stack, and start building.
They are all that great! I don’t have to dink around with the pattern, or select the “best" one: I just start building. I love that!  I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your high standards, and what a pleasure it is to do business with you!"

Cedrela montana

Red Mountain Cedar is a very close cousin of Spanish Cedar. It’s almost indistinguishable in all respects, but has the good fortune of evading the CITES export restrictions we must adhere to with Spanish Cedar. It’s a light-weight back and side wood (some are convinced that lower weight has a positive impact on tone) but is very stable. It’s exceptionally resonant and is well suited to both classical and steel string guitars. The color is a rich, reddish brown which is stunning under finish and the sets we get show a variety of typically wide (but deep) curly figure types. It’s reminiscent of some of the varieties of Koa we see. No two sets are alike. The second grade sets will have more subtle figure or may have some unevenness of color, which is minimized substantially under finish.

It is rare that we get a new tonewood that offers so much cosmetically and tonally. A significant added bonus is that this wood is harvested according to the high environmental and social standards of our friends in Peru.
