| Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) technology has found its way into lutherie. Large factories as well as a few individual builders have discovered the benefits. This workshop will help answer some questions by including: cost analysis, fixturing and a short demo on CNC programming/ toolpathing. |
The "double-top" is an exciting new development in guitar soundboards. Invented by the German luthiers Mattias Dammann and Gernot Wagner for high-performance classical guitars, these ultra-efficient, low-mass soundboards are now being used on every type of instrument. We will have classic, flamenco, and steel string guitars for you to hear, and a slide presentation on the construction and acoustic testing of the instruments. Panel members Randy Reynolds, Brian Burns, and Charles Fox will answer questions, and the instruments will be available for you to play. |
Mike will divide his talk between two different, but related topics. First, he'll discuss the geometry of guitar action, show why the neck angle is the best place to adjust action, and demonstrate the workings of his Adjustable Neck Angle System. And second, he'll discuss how nut and saddle action, string gauge, and nut and saddle compensation all affect guitar intonation. Along the way he'll demonstrate the conflict between Equal Temperament and the Overtone Series, showing how Equal Temperament makes perfect intonation impossible but is still the best game in town.
