Bashkin Guitars

 Colorado  $5,500

The ideal guitar allows the wood to fully express itself, both visually and tonally, with every element in perfect balance. It also faithfully expresses the personality of its owner.” Michael especially enjoys building with woods that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

 Germany  $5,300
www.queener-guitars.com
At the age of 14, Patrick Queener got his first guitar in Philadelphia. It was made in Asia–a plywood guitar. At that time he thought: “What a cool guitar!” Well, he learned better. It was while living in California that he realized he could merge his love for guitars and wood, and he decided to commit his life to building guitars. So, in 1997, he found an apprenticeship as a luthier in Munich–designing his own guitar in 1999, the QJ. Stevens Custom Guitars later hired him as a luthier. Patrick’s guitars have had great test reviews in the leading German acoustic magazine, and is considered one of the most innovative guitarmakers in Germany today.

The Service

When you purchase a new guitar from a luthier listed in good standing with ProfessionalLuthier.com, should the luthier go out of business during the year after your purchase, we will step in to cover the cost of any repairs due to defects in materials or workmanship up to $3,000 or the cost of the guitar, whichever is less.
These services are not available if any of the following events have occurred.

  1. An unauthorized repair, alteration, or modification.
  2. Misuse, negligence, accident, exposure to extremes of humidity or temperature
  3. This service excludes normal wear to finish, frets, and moving parts.
  4. This service does not include normal maintenance.

We will only provide this service when the selling Luthier is no longer in the business of building or repairing guitars.

The Process

When you purchase a guitar from the qualified luthier or their dealer, you will receive a certificate  with the date of sale and the identity of the instrument. You will send the certificate to us, we will validate it, add your registration number and return it to you. If within one year, you have a repair issue caused by a defect in materials or workmanship and the luthier is no longer in business, contact us by phone or email with your registration number.  We will have you send the guitar either to us or a qualified repair facility of our choice.  The initial shipment is at your expense. Repairs or replacements will be made and the instrument will be returned to you at our expense, unless the repair person determines that the repair did not qualify because of limits a, b, c, or d above.  Any disputes will be settled by filing a claim with the American Arbitration Association.

Market Price

Enter the price range you want to pay.
The price is the luthier’s recent minimum charge for a complete guitar. Special woods, inlay, case, etc. may be extra. Since this is the actual selling price, it is an indication of the guitars worth. The quality of the guitar is not the only criterion for its price. The luthier’s reputation is a part of the price. So, sometimes, a newcomer will be building great guitars for less money.
Also be aware that in the realm of acoustics, archtops are slightly more expensive than classical, and classical are slightly more expensive than steel string.

Sales Type

Selling through a dealer or music store is an indication of an established luthier who leaves sales and marketing to someone else, thus devoting themselves more to guitar building.  The dealer’s willingness to represent the builder is an indication of faith in the builder. Generally, the dealer has a guitar to sell – there is no waiting list. Some dealers, however, do take orders.

Buying directly from the builder provides a relationship with the luthier and an opportunity to have a guitar built to your specifications – both with regard to esthetic choices and personal playability – a neck that fits your hand, for example. Many luthiers take orders many months in advance of when they will be able to start the project.  A luthier may not use a dealer because it keeps the price down, and they enjoy personal contact with the buyer.

Many luthiers both sell direct and are represented by dealers.

Instrument Type

Limit your responses to the type of instrument that interests you most. You can also find a professional repair person.

Invitational Show

Choose luthiers who have participated in invitational shows or learn who is expected at upcoming shows. The people or panel that decides who will attend invitational shows want those who exhibit to enhance the shows reputation for quality. Mistakes happen, but generally, anyone who exhibits at one of these shows is at the top of their craft. If this were a list of places to eat, these would be the 5 star restaurants. We currently include Healdsburg, Miami, and Montreal as North American Invitational shows.

Location

A nearby location can be important to you if you are buying directly from the luthier. Locations to choose are only listed if there is a luthier available in the location.
